San Cristobal Island is one of the largest of the 87 islands that make up the Galapagos archipelago. It enjoys an exceptional climate and a unique terroir thanks to rivers fed by the volcanic crater lake “El Junco”. This mineral-rich spring water and moist, fertile volcanic soil bring life to the island.
The “El Cafetal” plantation is the only coffee plantation in the archipelago. The plantation is only between 140m and 300m above sea level. But because of the particular atmospheric conditions of the island, in particular due to the Humboldt current originating in Antarctica, this corresponds to an altitude of approximately 800m on the continent. In 1978 UNESCO listed the archipelago as a world heritage site. As a result, San Cristobal coffee grows in the shade of “original” trees sometimes over 130 years old.
